PIPELINE •
ORAL HUPERZINE A FOR ALZHEIMER’S
DISEASE
AD is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by progressively worsening symptoms of cognitive impairment, depression and behavioral disturbances, ultimately culminating in death. The pathophysiology of disease includes deficits in neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine (ACh), as well as amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles that lead to brain cell death. Multiple mechanisms of action, together with a significant body of existing clinical data generated in China, suggest that Huperzine A may compare favorably in safety and tolerability to currently-available AChE inhibitors and may also possess neuroprotection and disease modification capabilities.
Neuro-Hitech has completed two Phase I studies demonstrating safety and tolerability in normal elderly subjects. Neuro-Hitech has also completed the double-blind part of its Phase 2 clinical trial of Huperzine A in the treatment of patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s diseaseis. Top line data release expected Q1-2008
